A close-up of the traditional windlass. The pawl is hinged behind the bitts and clinks over the toothed wheel in the middle of the barrel. A 4' spike is placed in the socket seen on the port side of the barrel and levered down, the pawl taking up the gain. A powerful system, cheap to make and easy to maintain with little to go wrong.
